Inspiration
While I was researching ideas for another mosaic, I stumbled across Steve McCurry's unforgettable 1985 National Geographic photograph of the Afghan Girl. Her gaze drew me in completely.
Could I recreate her haunting expression in wood mosaic? I had to try.
Maybe you too feel her indomitable human spirit emerge from this collection of wood fragments.

Biography

Meleah Gabhart reimagines iconic portraits, nature and archetypal themes through the language of wood! Her mosaics blur the line between realism and abstraction, drawing the viewer into an intimate experience.
Each wood piece of the mosaic is individually cut, carved and sanded. She uses the natural grain and natural color of each wood piece - every tone and variation is in the wood itself - to build depth, emotion and movement.
